Q. Can I drink the water ?
Yes, all our water comes from a fresh natural spring up the volcano. The same water we use for the showers, pool and hot-tub.
Q. Showers and Toilets
All of our showers are outdoors. In all our showers, the used water goes directly back to the land, so please only use biodegradable soap! If you don’t have any, you can get it from the Zopilote-shop down towards Balgüe or from Café Campestre in Balgüe.
If you have the need for a warm shower, use the one between the Pool and the Temple, its water is compost and sun heated.
The private showers by the cabañas are exclusively for the use of whoever stays in the corresponding cabaña, so please don’t use it unless you are staying there or you got permission from the people staying there.
All toilets here at InanItah are composting toilets, so please don’t throw anything non-biodegradable into them.
No matter which toilet you use, cover your poop with 2 to 3 scoops of the composting mix which is available at each toilet (either in a bag or a bucket).
Once you are done, close the lid again and ensure it seals the toilet tightly - this is crucial to prevent flies from getting into the toilet. Please sweep after use to keep tidy.
Q. Trash
All non-biodegradable trash has to be stuffed into a plastic bottle - that way, we are turning our waste into “eco-bricks” that can serve as building material. For that reason, we have the Bottle Stuffing-Station with used plastic bottles as recipients for the trash and metal bars to help stuff it into them.
If your trash is too big to fit into a bottle (for example, an empty shampoo bottle): there is a strong pair of scissors to cut. If you bring up non-biodegradable material, you either take it back with you or you stuff it into one of the eco-bricks! Don’t make your trash someone else’s responsibility please!
Q. Is there Laundry On Site?
We have a non-electric eco friendly biking laundry machine to use to wash clothes. We use soapnuts from our tree as soap. You are welcome to bring biodegradable laundry soap/strips. All clothes are then hung dry by the solar panels. The process can take anywhere from 30-40 minutes. If you do not wish to bike to do your laundry, this can be done by Mayela for 25-30 Cordoba per pound.
Q. Security
We recommend that you secure your valuable items:
Small valuables (passport, money, credit cards) in our Office safe
Your backpack/suitcase and electronic devices (computer, camera etc.) in the Office room overnight or when not in use
Opening times to the storage room and safe are the volunteering hours. If you need something from the safe outside of the specified times, ask several hours in advance. Stick to the regular opening hours as much as possible!
